Refurbished Daycare at the Kitale Women Prison
In June 2019, the Change a Life Initiative visited the Kitale Women Prison to support children under four years residing in prison with their mothers, donating diapers, wipes, baby oil, toys, baby clothes and shoes
A great concern was the need to refurbish the children holding room, where they spend most of the time as their mothers attend to prison chores and court sessions. At the time, the spacious room lacked several necessities
Decisively, we resolved to upgrade the room and make it comfortable for the children. It was tormenting to see them share the available mattresses and a carpet, having to make do with the modest environment. We all thought to ourselves ‘this could be my child
We will appreciate any support accorded to the children. We may have not given birth to them but they are our responsibility, all of us because they have not committed any crime,” one of the prison warders lamented, sentiments that were shared by the respective mothers and other inmates
Scenes of the warders and other inmates interacting and cheering up the kids gave us some leap of hope, at least the children enjoyed such kind of love. We could see their sacrifices aimed at ensuring the kids feel at home despite the restricting environment
The most difficult moment was the point at which we needed to leave. We struggled to let go of the kids, whom we had bonded with and became playmates. The appreciation from their mothers was further evident in the praise and worship sessions we had at the beginning and end of our visit. It was difficultto leave but we were encouraged by our promise to return soon during the refurbishment process and the unveiling of the daycare room
In two months after our first visit, we delivered on our promise and celebrated the great work we had collectively achieved as seen below
