A Refugee Journey

A Refugee Journey of Loss, Resilience and Hope

It is two years since Nancy ran from Congo, the only home she had known until one night when unknown individuals broke into her home where she was sexually assaulted and left for dead

Currently, a refugee at the Kakuma Refugee camp, Nancy’s ordeal and long journey to Kenya is one of agony, survival and laced with hope for a better future for her children. In the camp, she lives with two of her children and wishes to physically reunite with her oldest son who fled the night they were assaulted

Life at the camp has been tough considering her previous occupation as a human rights activist in Kinshasa, Congo where she led a decent life

“My journey to Kenya was very tormenting. I walked miles not knowing where I was headed with a child in my hands hiking lifts in between. At some point, while in Kigoma, we both fell sick and I discovered I was pregnant. This took away all my hope and energy. We later got a lift in one of the trucks headed to Nairobi, a kind driver who shared his food and treated us well until our arrival at the UNHCR offices in Nairobi,” Nancy narrated

We met Nancy amid a past visit to the Kakuma Refugeecamp and that was the start of our association. Her story soaked our eyes and created an instant bond

“I accept all the suffering. I never looked for those rapists. They ruined my life. Which other pain can I ever feel? I only have a mother’s pain for my children. Today I carry a child fathered by a man I don’t know and have not seen. I breastfeed a child whose father entered my house unwelcomed, he was not my guest, he only ruined my life. But I love this child because we are bound by blood. So what pain can kill my spirit? I just pray for Gods help for my children to grow up and excel,” she told us

Since this visit in August 2018, we have stayed in contact with Nancy, supporting part of her monthly essential needs and emerging crises. We have kept close correspondence offering moral support. So symbiotic is the friendship that Nancy wouldregularly keep an eye on our advancement and that of our families

Amid the April 2019 downpour, her house collapsed and we have been supporting the rebuilding process to ensure her family has a decenthaven they can call home for the time being

Nancy’s prayer is to either find some form of casual employment or capital to start a shop within the camp and be self-sustainable – which we hope to help her accomplish

In the long haul, she longs to reunite with the son she left in Congo and have all the children under her roof and care
